Meet the Senior Production Manager: Kay Kim

Quick Intro

Name: Kay Kim
Your Role: Senior Production Manager. My role is to manage our games at @Ocean Drive Studio’s global operations, as well as support the team in building and launching incredible games!

What else?: I was born in the United States but grew up in Korea for 18 years, having returned to California to pursue a college degree. I’m a huge fan of MMORPGs, first person shooters, and turn-based games. I played World of Warcraft and Counter Strike for almost a decade, and having grew up in Korea I was influenced by a lot of PC games like Aion, Lineage, The Kingdom of the Winds, TalesWeaver, Sudden Attack, Diablo, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and more.

When I was a kid, I couldn’t convince my parents to buy me a decent gaming PC. But it didn’t stop me from playing all the greatest games during that time. I would play the games at the local PC cafés, which let anyone play any games at any time, charging an affordable one dollar per hour. It became a daily routine among my friends to play multiplayer games after school in Korea.

I also enjoy longboarding near the beachside and swimming during my downtime. I’m a lover of sushi and a binge watcher of sci-fi movies and dramas.

You can play games while ordering any food in PC café in Korea!

With my longboard crew at Venice Beach.

One of my favorite SF series is Battlestar Galactica.

Why did you join Ocean Drive Studio? ‘To create fun games’ with this incredible team. It was the opportunity to begin anew, find new ways to build an incredible gaming community, take an open development approach, and create experiences more powerful than movies or books. There is usually high risk and high return factored in when joining a new start-up. However, in the end, this very risk also can be one of the major motivating factors to build ‘fun’ games for our fans.

Games as a Gamer

Favorite Games:
My top three games of all time are World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms series. League of Legends, GTA, and Football Manager were close candidates.

For the Horde!!

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI.

My Previous Projects:
Before Ocean Drive Studio, I worked at Nexon on the PC title Dragon Nest. Afterwards, I joined Netmarble and managed several mobile titles such as Star Wars: Force Arena, Iron Throne, Marvel Future Fight, Seven Deadly Sins, and Magic: Manastrike. After four years at Netmarble, I longed to go back to work on PC/console titles. So, I joined 505 Games as a Senior Product Manager and managed multiple (unannounced) titles for about 15 months before joining Ocean Drive Studio.

Star Wars: Force Arena.

Iron Throne was Netmarble’s first 4x strategy mobile game.

Favorite Game Studios:
Blizzard, Riot Games, and Rockstar Games.

What have you been playing lately?:
I’ve been playing a lot of competitive games such as League of Legends, Valorant, and Call of Duty: Warzone. I enjoy playing competitive games, especially with my old college friends. I also spent a lot of time on Genshin Impact, mainly for “research” purposes, but eventually got hooked and invested quite of bit of time in it.

I’m excited to join this phenomenal team and I’m an avid believer that we can create great unique games. Major milestones are coming up quickly for our first project, Lost Eidolons, and we’ll be sure to share the progress as quickly as possible when it’s ready. I’m fully looking forward to the next steps we will take in our journey with the titles in our pipeline. Stay tuned everyone! Thanks for reading.
